Hard to get manual transmission in gear

 · I believe it's because if the synchros aren't meshed right when you're trying to get it into gear, you'll experience this. All you need to do is drop it into second gear (or another gear) and just bump the jeep forward the smallest amount, then try to drop it into first (or reverse).  · If you want to confirm that this is the problem, the next time it becomes hard to shift the transmission into gear, open the hood and pour cold water over the clutch master cylinder. If the transmission can now be shifted into gears replace the master cylinder.  · Its hard to get into 1st, 2nd and reverse almost all the time. When the car warms up the symptoms are a little better but still pretty bad. It seems like the shifter gets stuck at the gate and then once enough effort is put on the shifter it pops in. The symptoms are just as .

Discussion Starter · #1 · . I have a Scion Tc with 28, miles. I recently have started to have problems getting the car to shift into 1st gear from a dead stop and sometimes have issues getting the gear into 2nd. The problems are intermitent and the dealer (the geniouses that they are) can't seem to replicate the problem. A lot of the time I go to shift into gear and it won't go and when I try again I hear a grinding noise like something is spinning against the shifter. Reverse is the most annoying gear and I really have to pull hard to get it in. Also it feels like the transmission is actually shaking back and forth and makes a very bad sound sometimes. So, here are six major causes explaining why is it hard to shift gears with a manual transmission, which can prevent tearing your pocket. 1. The Clutch System. The clutch system is the first reason why manual transmission hard to shift. In simple words, the clutch connects the engine of the vehicle to its wheels. If the gear lever does not slot surely into a gear and feels rubbery then it’s a problem with the bushes at the bottom of the gear lever. This could have become hard and brittle, which will make it tough to change gears. Also check the gear linkage mechanism. There are two kinds of gear linkage mechanisms – cable shift or rod shift. If you want to confirm that this is the problem, the next time it becomes hard to shift the transmission into gear, open the hood and pour cold water over the clutch master cylinder. If the transmission can now be shifted into gears replace the master cylinder.
